Translation is not just a matter of accuracy; it is handcrafted work

Translation is not simply a matter of replacing words written in one language with words from another.

The aim is to dismantle a structure, understand their intention and to reconstruct it for another language, another culture and another reader.

It’s about choosing between several possible options and understanding why one works better than the others.

In that sense, we translators are masters of language.

And, as with any trade, judgement cannot be improvised: it is practised, put to the test and refined.

Knowing how to translate is not always enough to pass the exam.

You may have a good education, years of experience and an excellent command of both languages, and yet still not know exactly what NAATI expects of your performance.

Because this exam goes beyond a translation that simply “sounds good”. It assesses the accuracy of meaning, linguistic quality, register, the purpose of the text, genre conventions and the professional decisions you make under specific conditions.

The real challenge is not translation: is to learn to look at your own translation through the eyes of a proofreader.

Not all translators require the same level of training.

From Core to Studio to Atelier.

Every trade begins with a base.

Firstly, you need to understand the tools: how the exam is marked, what types of errors can affect your result, how to read a text through a translator’s eyes, and how to justify your choices.

Next, you need to practise. Look at other solutions. Compare different approaches. Spot patterns. Listen to feedback. Make mistakes whilst receiving guidance, and learn to correct yourself deliberately.

Finally, when you want to take your preparation to a more personalised level, you need someone to observe your style, your recurring mistakes, your strengths and your particular way of translating.

How a translator is trained like a craftsman.
